As the eye test told anyone who watched the New York Jets play in 2024, Breece Hall was superb at finding a way to rip off a chunk play last season.
Oftentimes, it felt as though the Jets only hope of scoring was if Hall found a way to do it, and he answered that call regularly.
However, while it’s easy to give all the credit to Hall, a chunk play doesn’t occur because of one player. It involves a good play design and strong blocking up front. Under which formation were the Jets’ likeliest to accomplish that and generate a chunk play on the ground? According to @CarterDonnick on X, the answer for the Jets was from 21 personnel, which means that two running backs and one tight end were on the field.
More specifically, it looks like the Jets’ 21 personnel was one of the more effective units on the ground in the league as it pertained to chunk plays, with the group turning out such plays at the 21st highest rate of any personnel grouping in the league.
