Isaiah Hartenstein: Updates on big men free agent market

Following the coronation of the Boston Celtics and an eventful-but-underhyped NBA draft, the free agency officially opened on Sunday, June 30 at 6 p.m. ET… and it was rather underwhelming compared to years past.

Not a lot of earth-shattering deals were signed (or announced/reported) through Sunday, with most of the action still to unfold during the first days of July.

One of the players still available and up for grabs is New York Knicks unrestricted free agent center Isaiah Hartenstein, who might or might not re-sign with New York ahead of the 2024-25 season.

The Knicks want to keep Hartenstein, who became the team’s starting center as last season advanced, but they need to remove some salary from their books before they can submit a max, four-year and $72.5 million offer to the German lad.

With all possibilities still on the table, here’s everything that has gone on (and is going on, as we’ll be live-updating this post) in the free-agent market related to Hartenstein and other big men that could end up being Knicks targets in replacement of I-Hart.

  • June 30 – 9:55: Mason Plumlee signs a one—year contract with the Phoenix Suns for an undisclosed sum.
  • June 30 – 8:42 PM: Jonas Valanciunas signs a three-year, $30 million contract with the Washington Wizards following the selection of No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr in the 2024 draft.
  • June 30 – 7:03 PM: Andre Drummond signs a two-year, $10 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. He gets a player option in the second year.
  • June 30 – 6:30 PM: Isaiah Hartenstein meeting with the OKC Thunder in Eugene, OR. No information about a potential deal being in place has emerged, which means this meeting is most probably about convincing I-Hart to sign with the Thunder rather than just inviting him to put ink to paper. Still work to be done by the Thunder here, one would assume.
  • June 30, 6:02 PM: Kevin Love re-signs with the Miami Heat, inking a two-year, $8 million contract.
