It’s not a huge surprise to find out, but don’t expect the Lions to add a wide receiver before training camp, if ever over the course of the preseason and the regular season.
In a broad sense, after Amon-Ra St. Brown, the Detroit Lions have question marks at wide receiver. Jameson Williams has the opportunity fully in front of him to emerge, but we have to see it. Donovan Peoples-Jones should benefit from an offseason learning the offense. Kalif Raymond could be a sneaky factor in the mix, and he’s hard to bet against.
On the Detroit Lions Podcast this week, rooted in a conversation about Jameson Williams and his changing role, Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire put the idea of the Lions adding another wide receiver (before camp at least) to bed.
“I know they’re excited about what they’ve got in him, and that’s why they’re not pursuing any other wide receivers and you will not see other wide receivers brought in,” Risdon said. “Agents have asked. I know an agent of a current free agent, Detroit is not interested in bringing in any receivers at this point.”
Of course the situation could change, due to injury or underperformance during training camp/preseason games, which Risdon was sure to acknowledge.
“Now that could change once camp starts or someone gets hurt or maybe the Tom Kennedy roller coaster isn’t worth riding again. Maybe they want something different there, maybe Antoine Green isn’t coming along as well as hoped,” Risdon explained. “I did see some progress from him (Green) this spring.”
Lions are not at all in the market for a wide receiver right now, as expected
It would really be something if no one among Williams, Peoples-Jones, Raymond, Antoine Green, etc. emerges from the cluster of other Lions’ wide receivers not named St. Brown. Risdon noted the Lions being good with their top four receivers, after hearing it right from the source(s).
“They’re pretty good with their top four being Amon-Ra, Jamo, Kalif Raymond and DPJ. They’re good with that, internally. If they get a chance to improve, they will, but they don’t really see that right now,” Risdon said. “They don’t see that as a need, not nearly as much as a lot of the fans do. That’s straight from the coaches, straight from the horse’s mouth.”
While it’s not very surprising the Lions are fine with their current wide receiver group, the idea has been reinforced by some closer intel from Risdon.
