Knicks have ‘checked in’ on Atlanta Hawks star center

The New York Knicks are actively scouting various centers to enhance their roster through trades.

Recent reports have linked them to potential candidates like Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz, Nick Richards of the Charlotte Hornets, and Jalen Duren of the Detroit Pistons.

Knicks’ Interest in Veteran Centers

However, the team seems to prefer an experienced veteran who can fit within their salary cap without necessitating a large expenditure in draft capital. Ian Bagley of SNY reports that the Knicks have expressed interest in Clint Capela of the Atlanta Hawks, a seasoned big man nearing the end of his contract.

Capela, who is set to earn $22.26 million next season, would require the Knicks to adjust their finances to accommodate his salary. Though trade discussions are not currently progressing, Capela’s addition could significantly strengthen the Knicks’ frontcourt.

Capela’s Recent Performance and Fit with the Knicks

Capela has maintained a consistent presence on the court, playing at least 63 games in each of the past four seasons and completing 73 games in the latest campaign. He averaged 11.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game last season, shooting 57.1% from the field. His robust rebounding abilities would complement Mitchell Robinson, who has struggled with injuries. Last season, Robinson was limited to just 31 regular-season games and six playoff games due to a foot injury.

Given the uncertain reliability of Robinson due to his health issues, the Knicks may opt to have him come off the bench should they secure a player like Capela, who is on an expiring contract. This move would not only solidify their starting lineup but also provide a cost-effective solution compared to investing in a younger player with a long-term contract.

Exploring Other Options

In addition to Capela, the Knicks have considered extending Precious Achiuwa, although his smaller stature may not make him the ideal backup center. Another potential target could be Brook Lopez of the Milwaukee Bucks, especially if the Bucks decide to offload his $23 million salary for next season.

The Knicks are taking a measured approach, remaining patient as they explore their options without rushing into an overpriced deal, keeping their focus on strategically building a team capable of championship contention.
