Rodgers absence: Words can be ‘deceiving’

Aaron Rodgers was among two New York Jets players who missed minicamp earlier this summer.

Coach Robert Saleh confirmed the quarterback’s absence was unexcused, but that Rodgers has been in communication with the team about not reporting.

During a recent appearance on the “Pardon My Take” podcast, the 40-year-old downplayed his absence, noting that the wording of the schedule can be “deceiving.”

“The thing that people don’t understand was that when I was in the NFC North years ago there used to be a real thing called minicamp where it was, it was five practices in three days,” Rodgers said. “Now it’s not minicamp. They can arbitrarily put a tag on whatever week of OTAs they want and say this is the minicamp week which makes it more mandatory than the other weeks. But it was an OTA schedule.

“That’s how words can be a little deceiving from time to time. It can make a story about how I missed a minicamp when it was really two OTA days,” he continued. “I came to the first 10.”

Rodgers was present or New York’s OTAs in May without any restrictions after tearing his Achilles in Week 1 of the 2023 season.

The four-time NFL MVP suffered the season-ending injury four plays into his Jets debut. Rodgers made improbable strides during his rehab and there was even a possibility of a return later last season. But with the Jets being too far out of a playoff spot and Rodgers wanting to prioritize his health, it was decided he’d be activated off injured reserve, but not play.
