Rangers: Boyd responds to what Merson said about Old Firm live on Sky Sports

Kris Boyd shut down suggestions from Paul Merson that Rangers v Celtic could be arranged for the last game of the season as he explained the Old Firm is not like English derbies.

Boyd explained that the game can’t take place on the final day as it cannot kick off at 3pm – unlike games in England – and will have to be played at 12:30 at the latest.

This came after the panel questioned how the games would be arranged after the split amid the tense title battle for the SPFL between the Old Firm clubs.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News [13 April, 13:27], Merson questioned: “Would they have the Celtic v Rangers game on the last day of the season?”

Boyd then reacted: “No chance. Absolutely not. They can’t kick off at three o’clock. It’s not like down here where you’ve got big derbies but can kick off at any time. That’ll be at 12 o’clock, 12:30 at the latest. It’ll be on the second or the third weekend.”

Kris Boyd fires back at Paul Merson amid Rangers v Celtic title race

Merson’s suggestion came from the idea that the title could be decided on the final day – perhaps a fanciful view of what an Old Firm title decider on the final day of the season would actually look like despite the fact no away fans would be in attendance.

After a 3-3 draw at Ibrox saw neither side make any advanced claim towards the top of the table, Rangers have the title race in their hands as they know if they win the rest of their games, they will win the league.

However, they still have to play Celtic at Parkhead which could prove the ultimate decider. Alan Brazil insisted Celtic are the ones with the rest of the season in their hands as they find themselves in the same position – win every game to win the title.

As Brazil insisted, the result means the title race is far from over. The clash at Parkhead later this season will likely prove the true decider in front of a packed Celtic crowd and it will be up to Clement to ensure his team turns up.
